Winter is Coming

Spoiler Alert: this post has absolutely nothing to do with Game of Thrones. I’ve never seen the tv show and I only got partway through the second book before deciding it wasn’t for me.

That said, the title is definitely true. There’s no snow on the ground yet, but I live in mortal fear that every day is the one where I will wake up, open my blinds, and scream bloody murder because the ground is covered in snow. I really probably should get a move on on buying winter boots. I already have a winter jacket, but the boots just haven’t happened yet. This weekend I really will go buy them.

In other news, Canadian Thanksgiving was last weekend. Obviously home is a little bit far for me now so instead a bunch of people from school had an Orphan Thanksgiving/Lawsgiving.

My Lawsgiving Contribution

My Lawsgiving Contribution.

I made the brownies in the middle for the first time a few weeks ago when my section had a potluck and was told I needed to make them at every future occasion. They’re apparently called ‘Slutty Brownies’, but because we’re super nerds we’ve renamed them to ‘Bedford Brownies’. For those of you not in the know, the Bedford case was this recent Supreme Court of Canada case that has to do with prostitution laws. It’s awful, but it’s definitely now a thing.

Lawsgiving Feast!

Lawsgiving Feast!

School chugs on. We actually had our first (and only for this semester) midterm today. It was for Public Law and I don’t think it went terribly. I’m not sure it went amazing either, but talking to people afterwards made me pretty confident I was on the right track at least. And, worst case scenario, it’s a ‘help not hurt’ exam so if we do better on our final in December then the midterm won’t even count. And apparently most people do awful on it anyway. Welcome to law school I guess. They’ve got to take us all down a peg.

I swear I do take other classes.

I swear I do take other classes, but this is Property again.

Other than that life is really starting to settle into a routine. I’m doing archery with the Queen’s club a few times a week and I was selected to be a staff writer for the Queen’s Law news blog. We have our first meeting next week. I was able to vote yesterday (Canadians – if you haven’t voted yet, make sure you do on October 19th) and I’m in the midst of planning for NaNoWriMo. Life is good.

Get Oriented!

Wow. So I’m officially a law student now. That’s really weird to say and write. I imagine I’ll get used to it in time, but for now it’s still new and exciting.

Our orientation started last Tuesday and even though it’s only been a few days it feels like we’ve done so much already. The first thing we had to do was go down to the law school (which I have heard referred to as Macdonald Hall, Sir John A, and J-Mac) and verify our enrolment, sign photo release forms, and pick up some swag provided to us by law firms and our orientation tee shirts. My team has a yellow shirt and is Team Avengers.

After that we mingled, picked up our new student cards (mine is horrendous and UVic’s were nicer), and had a bit of a break before meeting our fellow group members and heading out for trivia night.

Graffiti Party

Graffiti Party

Most of the last couple of days have been late nights – there was a graffiti party, a movie night (where my team watched, what else, The Avengers, and a costume party night – where I was a very last minute thrown together Black Widow).

Costume Party

Costume Party

Today is a day off for us which has been nice. My roommate – who I shall call the Musician – and I were picked up by some of her family friends here in Kingston and they took us thrift store shopping. Our best purchase by far is a gorgeous coffee table that we only paid $25 for. After that I took my suit to a tailor and did some grocery shopping. Tomorrow afternoon we have a team potluck before heading out for bowling so I’ll be making cookies.

And I just finished doing my first official law school readings – for Public Law. I think that made it feel more real than anything else has. And, as a treat for myself for finishing my first readings, I pre-ordered my copy of the Welcome to Night Vale novel. Honestly, it’s been a whirlwind of meeting new people, social activities, and the reality that law school is here. I even bought myself a Queen’s law hat. The longer I’m here, the more convinced I am that I made the right decision.

My kind of party :P

So, today I decided to bake some cupcakes in true PinkiePie style, and they turned out delicious!

They didn't rise as much as the recipe said they would...

They didn’t rise as much as the recipe said they would…

I’ve only heard that they are delicious, though, since I haven’t tried any myself, yet. I’m waiting for the icing to be done to do that (I thought we had icing sugar, but we don’t, so I’m waiting until we get some and put it on the cupcakes to eat one. And maybe some food dye, too.)

My Aunt was over helping me a bit, reading me the recipe and offering advice about certain things regarding baking in general. Like, the fact that she mixes her egg(s) and milk together before adding them to the rest of the ingredients. It was also an adventure, since today I used an electric hand mixer for the first time. I would have sworn that when I put it in, all the ingredients would go flying around the room. They didn’t, and I almost feel sad about the fact. Though grateful I don’t have to clean it up.

A view into the oven while the second batch baked; that's my dad's mini pizza.

I only got two batches out the recipe, which is less then last time, but the actual amount that the recipe said it would make. I just don’t normally pay attention to that kind of stuff on a recipe. Though I didn’t really follow this recipe, which is just for plain white cupcakes, to the letter. I substituted the granulated sugar for brown, we didn’t have any vanilla, and I put other things like cinnamon and nutmeg in it.

Finally, after a 10-12min baking period (which surprised my Aunt) the last of the cupcakes were done!

I’m going to finish off this post with a song from MLP! The cupcake song! XD

EDIT: And with Icing!

I quite enjoyed drawing on these cupcakes their various squiggles. :)

I quite enjoyed drawing on these cupcakes their various squiggles. 🙂

The icing was simple to make, just icing sugar, butter, milk and vanilla. It takes great and applied super easily. I started with the idea of just covering them all in icing, but it didn’t take long (3 cupcakes to be exact) for me to get bored with that and start drawing different designs and patterns on them. A smaller hole in the ziplock bag’s corner would allow for more intricate designs then I was able to manage this time.

Aren't they all pretty? And I have icing left over for the next time I bake!

Baking, its joys and pains.

Hello! (think PinkiePie, all excitement and energy and high pitched.)

I have always loved baking, but recently I’ve been trying to do more. The only problem with this is I have no one to eat it. I have never been all that big into eating sweets, and I definitely prefer baking and making them to eating them. Except gummy worms, those are a weakness of mine. I don’t have an abundance of people in my life who enjoy eating massive amounts of sweet baked goods, so I tend to not bake for the sole reason that we still have some left from the last time I baked.

Recently I baked a batch of about 20 white vanilla cupcakes, and they taste delicious, but we still have about 10 left sitting on the counter. I want to do more baking, but it would just be a waste at this point. You can see my conundrum. I want to do some baking with cinnamon hearts in it, cookies, cupcakes, etc. but I hate to see my baked goods go to waste, and if I bake new treats now the white vanilla cupcakes will definitely remain untouched until they go stale.

Our oven is broken, but so broken that we can’t use it and then gets fixed. Oh, no, the oven is broken just enough to be annoying while cooking and baking but to not be a priority on the ‘To Do List’. The bottom element (which is the one that is mainly responsible for baking and cooking) is malfunctioning and not turning on. We only have the top broil element, so in order for me to even bake the white vanilla cupcakes, I had to turn the temperature up to 450°F and put the rack at the very bottom of the oven. At least we have a temperature gauge in the oven, so I was able to know what temperature I was actually baking the cupcakes at.

I’m always looking for new recipes to try and make, so if anyone has any they are willing to share, I would really appreciate it. You can email them to

On another note that’s completely unrelated to baking, I’m thinking about creating an email address just for the questions I’m planning on asking about feminism. When I do, I will post it here so that anyone who wants can contribute.

Another completely different topic, I loved getting dressed today. I have most of my favourite fandoms represented, and days like that always make me happy.

Thank you and have an amazing day!

Lesson Learned: Less Food Dye

Now, if it hasn’t been obvious, we’re not exactly classic party people. If first year had gone a little differently Rachel probably could have been, after all she likes dancing and has seemingly endless energy. Kali, on the other hand, was never meant to be a party person as she has no coordination (hence she doesn’t dance) and doesn’t really like large crowds. So, if Rachel had befriended someone different her life could be completely different. As it stands though we did go to a party on Thursday night – a Doctor Who themed party.

It was our friend Aaron’s birthday, and since he likes Doctor Who, and so do most of us, we decided that would be the theme of the night. Rachel even promised to make TARDIS cookies.

Rachel brought the ingredients for the cookies to make them at the party. Unfortunately she hadn’t made sugar cookies since she was 6 so she wasn’t quite sure what she was doing. She did know that it needed more food dye – a decision she would come to regret. She kept adding food dye until the whole bottle she had just bought was all gone. The color was amazing – it was really quite close to TARDIS blue, but unfortunately although it looked good it apparently didn’t taste so good. Neither of us tried it, but the girls who did were… less than impressed. They were also left with blue mouths.

Mixing Up the Batter... This is probably where Rachel should have stopped adding food colouring.

Even though the cookies were a bust there was still cake. And it had a TARDIS too. Luckily none of us tried to make it so it actually tasted good.

After cake we adjourned to the living room. Our hostess got a bit worked up because her landlord reprimanded her because we were too loud. We tried to keep it down after that, but she was still nervous – and with good reason too, a few of the guests didn’t have a whole lot of volume control so we had to keep shushing them.

Rachel and one of the guests (I’ll call him The Entertainer) noticed a game of Scrabble and decided to play. 4 people played – The Entertainer, Rachel, Stephanie (The Hostess), and Aaron (The Birthday Boy) – all of whom had had alcohol. It started off with the word Ralth (which was apparently supposed to be Ralph), and didn’t get that much better. I do think most of the other words were real words though, and if nothing else it was pretty hilarious to watch. Now that I think about it they should have tried to make it Doctor Who Scrabble. That might have been too difficult at that point though…

We ended up ordering some pizza and Kali left soon after that with a few of the girls who had to get going. Rachel stayed a bit later though and they actually ended up watching an episode of Doctor Who. They watched the first episode of the reboot (“Rose”) because The Entertainer had never seen any new Who – only the older stuff.

Despite the food dye mishap it was still a whole lot of fun. And we had three sonic screwdrivers, a TARDIS, and a Dalek in one room and the world didn’t end.

Baking Party

On Saturday we had a baking party at Rachel’s place. Rachel had to do pretty much all the baking and Kali “supervised”. Even so it was a whole lot of fun. Oh the things you can do during reading break.

Brownie Batter

Out of the oven & a bit crispy on the sides... oops

We made cookies too, and boy was the batter thick

Don't they look yummy!

Now we just need to eat it all!
